In other words, Jeep is now offering a Factory option to mount side mirrors when the doors are off.
I feel like this is caving, on their part. The aftermarket handles this issue for those that want it, and Jeep doing it themselves I feel is them giving up some footing RE: “you don’t want your mirrors getting knocked off on the trail!”

It is funny... the basic designs been the same for generations.
Ford puts a different wrinkle out there and FCA suddenly has to respond? Maybe they DO feel some heat from BroncoMania.
I’m with you, though, the after-market is covering this fine.

I feel bad for FCA. It seems like they put a bunch more effort to mordernize the wrangler this gen and Ford just swings past and eats their lunch.
Ford really has a history of punishing hubris. Now if only they could have a history of properly rustproofing as well....

eh, Jeep’s got a huge catalog of aftermarket parts, this is just one more thing that they weren’t making money on before

This is a misguided take at best. Aftermarket mirrors for doors-off operation are $50+. This is just the FCA accessory dept seeing the opportunity to sell another accessory.
From personal experience, driving a JL doors-off, roof down, and without mirrors is kinda terrifying, especially on the highway. When the roof is folded down it blocks the view of the rear-view mirror, so you can’t see shit behind you.

It’s the timing of it that registers to me that it is more than ‘just another accessory to make money from’. Obviously we’ll never know what FCA might have done if the new Bronco was never realized, but the fact that this factory-available accessory just so happened to become available from the factory after the Bronco was released smells like a reactive approach, especially since some of FCA’s own internal sales materials speak to the removed side mirrors as a positive feature not a demerit.

The biggest problems with the JL are the crappy steering, the nonsensical gearing and clutch feel with the manuel (and not offering it with the 2.0t) , and the noisy roof. Those are all arguably “Jeep things” that people just don’t understand.
T he Bronco will probably be better in these specific regards. TBD on what sort of shit-fuckery abounds with first year issues on it though. The most likely verdict from the inevitable comparisons will be that the Bronco drives better on-road, the Jeep is better off-road, but you can’t really go wrong with either one as long as you accept the downsides.

I don’t think FCA’s plans for the lifecycle of the JL will change drastically - Keep the design for ~10 yrs with small updates , make a half dozen “special” editions every year, print money. So far, so good.
The only thing they did specific to the Bronco was announcing a V8-powered concept on OJ’s birthday in order to steal some press spotlight . Still no word on a production version yet.

My friend says he has had something like that for his Jeep for a long time, maybe aftermarket.
